Electric and Magnetic Fields Specialist

About the role
National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) is at the heart of energy in the UK. The electricity we provide getsthe nation to work, powers schools and brings energy to life. Our energy network connects the nation, so it’sessential that it’s continually evolving, advancing and improving.
As an Environmental Engineer (Electric and Magnetic Fields Specialist) you will provide internal and externaladvice and guidance regarding the potential impact of electricity transmission assets on the environment and thetechnical issues associated with operating assets in proximity to third parties. You will become a technicalauthority for Electric and Magnetic Fields (EMF) issues associated with the ongoing operation of transmissionplant, with occasional requirements to manage Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) and ElectromagneticCompatibility (EMC) issues as well.

As part of our hybrid working approach, this role offers a mix of office working in Warwick and home working.

Key Accountabilities
Support National Grid’s strategic relationships with government, research bodies and campaign groups toensure future legislation does not disproportionately constrain our operations.
Contribute to international research bodies and Standards committees to further our understanding of theimpact of our operations on people / the environment, and potential mitigations against these impacts.
Contribute to international projects to preserve industry knowledge of EMF.
Maintain personal profile as a technical expert in the EMF field and provide expert external advice toenhance National Grid’s reputation and attract commercial contracts.
Resolve complex internal and external technical queries, under tight timescales, often for inclusion inexternal documents such as Environmental Impact Assessments.
Carry out accurate and independent surveys, using specialist equipment and /or computer modelling, to:
Quantify issues and recommend improvement actions to reduce the impact of our operations on thepublic.

Deliver work for third parties under a commercial contract
Represent National Grid directly with the public including home visits, public meetings, email and telephoneenquiries. Convey scientifically accurate information to the public in a clear and calm manner, often insensitive and emotionally charged situations and often to vulnerable members of the public / people withpoor mental health.
Develop new technical policies, ensure the continued appropriateness of existing technical policies, andupdating these as required.
Ensure National Grid’s compliance with internal / external policies.
Act as an Expert Witness for EMF.
Support the maintenance (including the update of information) of emfs.info, as directed by the LeadEnvironmental Engineer.
Support the Associate Environmental Engineer with the management of the national EMF helpline onbehalf of the industry.
Provide accurate and up-to-date guidance to relevant teams across Electricity Transmission to ensureNational Grid’s compliance with the industry risk assessment.

About You
You will have an understanding of EMF issues associated with operating transmission plant in proximity to thepublic, coupled with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively to a range of different technical and non-technical audiences.
The ability to develop working relationships quickly and effectively, and influence key stakeholders is essential asis knowledge and a holistic understanding of the various transmission systems and associated technologies.
With proven ability to develop, implement and communicate company-wide policy and experience leadinginnovation and scientific projects, you will have experience of public communications and the ability to empathisein the face of public concern.

You will have a relevant STEM degree and possess a good understanding of our statutory requirements withregards to EMF. You will also have experience of both technical and reputational risk management, and possessexcellent technical report writing skills. A full driving licence is required.
A proactive, self-starter, you will have the ability to technically train and develop team members.

What You'll Get
A competitive salary between £43,500 – £55,000 – dependent on capability
As well as your base salary, you will receive a bonus based on personal and company performance and acompetitive contributory pension scheme where we will double match your contribution to a maximum companycontribution of 12%.
