The School of Engineering is seeking to appoint a motivated individual with a passion for practical laboratory science to join its skilled Technical Services team of ca.35 technical staff supporting a diverse and expanding range of research activities. The appointee will be primarily responsible for assisting with the safe, sustainable and efficient running of the School’s wet research laboratories, with a particular focus on the School’s bioengineering labs. This will include assisting in the provision of technical and laboratory support to the Schools’ research laboratory activities by participating in the day-to-day running of the research labs, and the upkeep and maintenance of laboratory equipment whilst ensuring a safe work environment for staff and students. While the successful candidate will be particularly instrumental in supporting the School’s bioengineering labs, they will likely also participate in supporting some other research areas, including carbon capture, nanomaterials and environmental engineering.
This would be an excellent opportunity for a current undergraduate student studying biology, chemistry or related discipline, or alternatively a person seeking to expand their experience working in scientific research laboratories. The successful candidate will be educated to SCQF level 7 or equivalent (Scottish Advanced Higher, HNC or completed 1st Year of a University degree) in Biology, Chemistry or related discipline and will have familiarity with working in a laboratory environment. The role is customer-facing and the School is a diverse and international community of staff and students. The post holder will therefore have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, an understanding of health & safety and a strong commitment to service delivery.
Your skills and attributes for success:
A passion for laboratory science.
Familiarity with working in a laboratory environment.
Interest in laboratory management.
Willingness and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Good IT skills, in particular MS Excel.
People have always been at the heart of our work. As part of the University, you are a part of our community. We are looking for people with drive, determination, and a passion for what they do. We are a place where everyone is welcome and offer a range of policies and benefits designed to support you in building the right meaningful/personalised flexibility for you.
A career with us has a range of other benefits that can be tailored to your lifestyle:
Professional development and subject matter expertise
Leading-edge research
Excellent benefits and support
Contributing to the work and purpose of the University.
This post is full-time (35 hours per week); however, we are open to considering part-time working patterns. The nature of the role is such that there is a requirement for the post-holder to work 100% on campus.
